Earth Day & Arbor Day Events in April

Just as the city is about to burst out in bloom, its time to celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day.  Earth Day is on April 22 and National Arbor Day is April 29 but there are events spreading across the next two weeks that bring our attention to our beautiful planet and how we can be a little nicer to her.  Check these out:

APRIL 15-17

NYC Green Festivallist
Friday 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Saturday 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Sunday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Explore more than 250 exhibitors, hear from more than 50 speakers, learn about local green nonprofits and sample vegan food and at this annual green marketplace devoted to sustainable living.

$12-$32, FREE for ages 16 and under. Seniors and Military receive a discount at the door. Students receive free admission on Friday and receive a discount on Saturday and Sunday at the door.


Earth Day Initiative in Union Square
Noon-7:00 p.m.
From live music to interactive displays to kid-friendly activities, this annual event put on by Earth Day Initiative is a favorite among green-thinking New Yorkers of all ages.

NYSOM Green Day in Harlem
2:00 pm-4:00 pm
An earth day celebration featuring plant pot painting (those who attend will receive a plant pot to paint with soil & seed to grow their own fruit or vegetables)- first come first served. Earth day arts & crafts, family fitness challenge, earth day storytime and more.

10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Give your time and help make Fort Tryon Park a little bit greener by volunteering with the Friends Committee of the Fort Tryon Park Trust and NYC Parks. Come in long pants and boots and sneakers and install plants on the Fort Washington terrace slope. Plants, tools and gloves will be provided.

Celebrate Earth Day with us! Activities include Urban Park Ranger-led hikes, interpretive dance and Native American performances, and light refreshments.

Earth Day in Prospect Park at Audubon Center at the Boathouse (in Prospect Park), Brooklyn
1:00 p.m. –4:00 p.m.
Join the Prospect Park Alliance at the Audubon Center for its annual Earth Day celebration.

Vegetable Gardening 101 at 200 Nevada Avenue (in High Rock Park) , Staten Island
2:00 p.m. –3:00 p.m.
Learn the basics of gardening from preparing soils, selecting seeds, and best planting practices, and discuss what is needed for a successful growing season and harvest.

Get in touch with your inner gardener at this GreenThumb workshop, where you can learn about insects that help gardens and take home a couple species to release in your own garden.

Earth Day 5K Green Tour 
Staggered start times between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm
This is a 5K with a twist as we raise money for our year-round environmental education programs and participate in a walking tour of great sites in the city, such as the Lowline (the world’s first underground park), the eco-friendly 1 Hotel Central Park, and a natural food cooking school, as well as a sneak peak of a new nature documentary.  It’s a great activity for friends, family, a corporate volunteer team, or school group.  Lunch will be provided by the Natural Gourmet Institute!

Help pick up litter and clean up the pathways to reveal the hidden beauty of this part of the park.
